A conference with this theme is to be held at the University of Amsterdam, Academic Medical Center, April 7-8, 2005.

The Dutch midwifery system is renowned worldwide for its ability to preserve pregnancy and childbirth as a normal life event. Central to the care approach is the Vademecum (Obstetric Manual). This unique conference win share the Dutch philosophy. An emphasis on the important role of the Vademecum in preserving unnecessary" medicalisation will be discussed, offering a real opportunity for the development of independent midwifery in Europe.
