Researchers at the Universidade Federal de Pelotas in Brazil set out to assess the association between Caesarean section (CS) delivery and pregnancy outcome at the institutional level. They obtained data for all women admitted for delivery to 120 institutions selected from 24 regions in eight Latin American countries. The median rate of CS delivery was 33%, with highest rates noted in private hospitals.

The rate of CS delivery was positively associated with postpartum antibiotic treatment and severe maternal morbidity and mortality, even after adjustment for risk factors.
