Midwives are currently achieving a high profile in the UK where the occasion of the IDM was incorporated into a new awareness-raising campaign, 'National Midwifery Week'. The aim is to increase the visibility of the profession, encourage people to consider midwifery as a career and make it clear that midwives are autonomous health professionals to whom pregnant women can refer themselves as the first point of contact with health services.
