After 26 years of lack of professional support, in the last two years there have been major advances for Romanian midwives. A report from Romania marks the achievements:

In 2003, education for midwives was reestablished in the Universities of Bucharest and Iasi.

Most recently, in June 2004, the Romanian Parliament promulgated a law for midwives. This law recognises the ICM Definition of the Midwife, as well as the EU Directives for Midwives. What was unexpected is the fact that this law gives to midwives the right to attend normal births not only in the hospital settings, hut at home as well.

In the last 10 years the Romanian Midwives Association has received help from: the International Confederation of Midwives, the European Midwives Association, the Royal College of Midwives, Georgetown University School of Nursing and Midwifery, the Dutch Midwives, Czech...
