Midwife receives anniversary award from JHPIEGO/MNH.

To mark 30 years of working to improve the health of women and families around the world, and achievements in the fields of reproductive and maternal/newborn health,JHPIEGO presented its Leadership in Health awards in September 2003. Recipients participated in a panel presentation entitled 'The continuum of women's reproductive health: voices from the field.'

Award-winner Soekir Soekaemi, a nurse-midwife from Indonesia, began by saying she was born 62 years ago in Pasuruan, East Java. One of nine children, her birth had been a difficult one and her mother had been greatly helped and supported by a midwife. This led to her own ambition to join the profession.

In 1992 she became active in the Indonesian Midwives Association (IBI) and in 1998 was appointed head of IBI in the East Java Province--a part of the organisation with 37 branches and nearly 9,000 members.
