JHPIEGO's Maternal and Neonatal Health Program and USAID's Asia and Near East Bureau, with Chulalongkorn University and the Ministry of Public Health of the Royal Thai Government, sponsored a meeting in Bangkok, Thailand, 20-23 January 2004, to review the evidence for preventing and treating postpartum haemorrhage. The conference drew 126 participants from 13 countries, including policymakers and program managers, researchers and clinicians, in medicine, nursing and midwifery. WHO, UNICEF and USAID representatives also participated.

The objectives of the meeting were to:

* Review the evidence for strategies for prevention of PPH in settings where skilled birth attendants may or may not be available

* Examine best practice for implementing large-scale programmes for preventing and treating PPH
