A statement issued in 2006 by the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (PMNCH) has made clear the significant role played by health care professional organisations in advancing the wellbeing of women, babies and their families.

The statement followed a meeting held in Geneva, Switzerland, which brought together representatives from organisations of midwives, nurses, obstetricians/gynaecologists, paediatricians and pharmacists.

The representatives agreed that health care professionals are crucial for the success and sustainability of activities such as:

* Preserving health and treating illness (in girls' health, women's health, reproductive health, healthy pregnancies, safe deliveries and newborn, child and adolescent health

* Teaching and training of health care professionals and other maternal and child health personnel at all levels

* Establishing standards for evidence-based health curricula, interventions, service delivery strategies, education and monitoring of health care...
