White Ribbon Alliance: safe motherhood champion awards.

For the second year, the White Ribbon Alliance has recognised with a 'champion' award the achievements of an individual or organisation who has worked for safe motherhood in a time of crisis.

In 2005, the award was given jointly to ICM member, the Indonesian Midwives Association, and Erni Munir, an Indonesian midwife who lost her husband, three daughters, her home and her clinic in the tsunami, yet continued to work tirelessly for the women and babies in the stricken area.

In 2006, the WRA has joined with the American College of Nurse Midwives-also an ICM member--to give an award recognising work aiding pregnant women, new mothers and infants affected by Hurricane Katrina, the devastating Atlantic hurricane of late August 2005, that caused massive flooding in New Orleans, USA.
