The World Health Organization (WHO) has begun issuing a series called Spotlight on statistics--A fact file on health workforce statistics. The second publication, in February 2008, was titled Gender and health workforce statistics, and it highlights important facts about women's role in healthcare worldwide.
Within the health sector, in many countries women comprise over 75% of the workforce. However, they are concentrated in the lower-status health occupations, nursing and midwifery personnel and other 'caring' cadres such as community health workers.
